The Arts Writing Incubator brings together diverse thinkers and makers who are invested in engaging with and write about contemporary black art.

Our sessions are virtual and feature black artists, writers, and curators who help develop participants’ knowledge and skillsets. At the end of each year, participants’ writing is edited into the BES journal, A Year in Black Art.

Ear Expansion

The 2026 Arts Writing Incubator pivots away from providing space for individuals to cultivate their own arts writing practice. Instead, we invited applications from people who have or are developing projects — publications, platforms, organizations, outlets, social media accounts, etc. — that provide access to arts critical thinking.

The selected cohort represents cutting-edge experiments in the style, tone, and distribution formats that art criticism can take.
