About the Conversation
Nikita Gale and Mandy Harris Williams were the Fall 2021 guests of The Black Embodiments Studio Artist + Writer Initiative. Over the course of several months, they embarked on studio visits and conversations about their practices, with the specific goal of helping Williams develop two new pieces of writing about Gale’s practice. In this conversation, they work through some keywords that animate their thinking, from ruins, to preservation, to what Gale calls “the feminine urge to refuse to refurbish.”

What will it take for us to fly free?
Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo presents new work as part of our public art project, Current Resident, wherein black artists are commissioned to research and develop art that is mailed to all residents of distinct Seattle zip codes. Branfman-Verissimo’s work is included in a shared mail package sent to 24,000 residents of 98122. The artist explains that their project is rooted in two key questions: “What time is it on the clock of the world?” and “What will it take for us to fly free?”
